William Joseph Headen (1837-1865) of Chatham County, NC, entered the University in 1856, joined the Dialectic Society, and graduated with second honors in 1860. He held the rank of lieutenant in the Confederate army. Headen became a teacher and lawyer, serving in the NC General Assembly from 1862 to 1864.
